A fabulous title that I worked on during my time as a designer at Quivertree Publications, The Story of a House is a celebration of the beautifully restored Château de la Creuzette in Boussac, France. It is a title that will delight foodies and Francophiles alike, with its synthesis of French country lifestyle images and over 90 illustrated recipes.
The book comprises two parts – The Story of a House and The C{r}ookbook, a soft cover “cheat sheet” for the aspiring French cook – presented together in a stunning foiled slipcase.
Complimenting the words of the owners of La Creuzette (Louis Jansen van Vuuren and Hardy Olivier) are beautiful photographs of the food, chateau interiors and French countryside shot by Hein van Tonder and Francois Pistorius.
This exciting project presented a number of aesthetic and technical challenges, including: a language and colour change (the Afrikaans version is in a stately bronze); curating the images of two different photographers to work together as a unified visual whole; managing the repro details and quality of what was essentially 4 books and 2 slipcovers.
Some selected images of the final product below.
